History
CENTENNIAL HERITAGE & ARCHITECTURAL EVOLUTION
The Grand Theatre was one of five theaters that operated in historic downtown Frankfort, Kentucky, between the mid-1800s and the 1970s, and it is the only one still existing with its theater configuration intact. The larger and more elegant Capitol Theatre was torn down in the 1970s, and the other three theaters were permanently converted into office space. The Grand was originally built in 1911 as a small (135 seat) vaudeville house. Silent movies were also shown, and in the late 1920s, the theater was wired for “talkies”.
In 1940, the Grand went through a significant transformation. A new 600-seat theater was added to the back of the original theater, which became the entrance lobby. The renovation was done in the modern style, popular at the time, and the Grand Theatre was operated as a movie theater by Chakeres until it closed in 1966. Since closing, the property has been used for a variety of commercial purposes, the most recent being real estate offices and an auction center.
Since 2009, the Grand has had a season of shows and concerts as well as being used as a cinema for both classic and current films. In January 2026, the theatre closed for extensive renovations. The Grand Reopening season will launch in August 2026.

In 2026, The Grand Theatre proudly entered its “Next Act.” Combining an extensive digital relaunch with vital infrastructure improvements headlined by the installation of our majestic new exterior marquee sign – the theater continues to honor its centennial heritage while securing its position as a modern, cultural hub for future generations.
Save the Grand Theatre, Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization formed in 2002 for the purpose of renovating the historic Grand Theatre and establishing it as the “center for the arts” in Kentucky’s Capital city.
OUR CORE MISSION & CIVIC PURPOSE
The Grand Theatre’s mission is to promote the arts and entertainment as Frankfort’s only Center for the Arts.
The overriding purpose is for the Grand to serve as an anchor for Frankfort’s downtown by drawing residents to our shows to spend money in the community. We also exist to draw tourists who will shop, eat and stay in Frankfort pre and post shows.
Our shows and educational activities enhance the quality of life for our residents and serve as a persuasive basis for new businesses to locate in Frankfort. Through this we strengthen our community ties and appeal to a broader audience both regionally and beyond.
